Startup Do's and Don'ts
If
you are considering starting up your very own wholesaling
business, here are some dos and don’ts that
you may want to consider. These dos and don’ts can be applied
to just about any kind of business you would ever consider
launching.
1.
Do be true to yourself and your interests. In other words,
don’t start a business on the premise of what you think will
be trendy or hot next year. Instead, think about what interests
you and what you think people really need right now. Trendsetting
is something that must grow out your business organically;
it cannot be forced. Also, if you focus on something that you
are interested in and something you know about, starting your
business will seem that much more interesting, easy, and yes,
even fun.
2.
Do share your knowledge rather than sell your ideas. If
you are passionate about your wholesaling business and you
feel excited about procuring certain products and making them
available to retailers, you are on the right track. Think about
your business knowledge and passion as something to share.
No one really likes the idea of having ideas forced upon them
or ‘sold’ to them. Also, as everyone knows, passion is contagious.
Chances are that if you demonstrate great enthusiasm for what
you are doing, others will go along with you for the ride.
3.
Do find a way to differentiate your wholesale business
from the pack. There are so many other wholesale businesses
out there. Simply do a little search on your favorite search
engine and you’ll see that there are many other wholesale businesses
out there that are looking to make it in the long-run. What
makes your business different from all the other wholesale
businesses out there? You will have to make sure that you have
a unique product inventory. There absolutely has to be something
unique about your wholesale business in order for it to survive.
If you haven’t figured out what that is, it’s time to do so
now.
4.
Don’t trust just any wholesale dealer, manufacturer, or
supplier without checking out their credentials. It may be
tempting to order that deeply discounted box of DVDs, digital
cameras, musical instruments, etc. but hold off on that until
you have a chance to evaluate the dealer with a sober eye.
Check to see if they are members of any well known industry
association or trade group. Check out their web site: does
it look deluxe or primitive? Check out their customer service:
is it reliable or non-existent? Make sure you know exactly
who you are dealing with before you sign on the dotted line.
5.
Don’t let yourself be carried away by the lure of wholesale
merchandise. It can be tempting to order too much merchandise
in one fell swoop, but resist this urge. Start off small. Put
in just a small order at first, especially if you are doing
business with a new dealer that you do not yet know well.
6.
Don’t spend all of your time behind the desk or behind
the glow of a computer screen. As a member of the wholesale
community, it is your responsibility to get out there and meet
with dealers and work on establishing good long-term working
relationships with clients and with suppliers. Establishing
good working relationships with certain clients can lead to
greater power of negotiation in the future. Also, by cultivating
good working relationships with suppliers and manufacturers,
you may also perhaps get the first crack at new product inventories
when they come to light. You will also gain more experience
and insights by talking to others.
