The Reality of Wholesale Purchasing

Starting your own wholesale business sounds incredibly fascinating, even fun, when the idea still swirls around your mind like a vague thought. But once the work of it begins, the reality of wholesale purchasing becomes evident: it is hard work & annoyingly difficult at times. If you are thinking about going into any business that requires regular wholesale purchasing, what sort of stumbling blocks are you apt to run into? Here is a brief overview of the most common stumbling blocks that you may come across when you begin to immerse yourself in the world of wholesale purchasing.

1. The difficulty of finding popular brand names. Many newcomers to the world of wholesale purchasing imagine that wholesale purchasing is a kind of magical world that allows you sudden access to all the latest and greatest products at low, low wholesale prices. This is not true. It is actually very difficult to procure popular brand names at wholesale prices. Why, you ask? Good question. The reason it is so difficult to procure popular brand name items makes sense if you think about it. If you think about it, part of the reason popular brand names are popular to begin with is that they are considered exclusive and somewhat difficult to get. If they were made available everywhere at discounted prices, they would no longer be as coveted as brand name items. Thus, companies protect the reputation of their popular brand names tooth and nail. They will not allow them to be wholesaled at low prices. This explains why so many imitation products are released at low wholesale prices. So don’t expect to get your hands on the most popular brand names right away.

2. Be wary of scammers and frauds. The world of wholesale purchasing is unfortunately fraught with scammers and frauds. Wherever there is money, and unsuspecting people with money, you can bet that the scammers and frauds are not far behind. Welcome to the cold reality of wholesale purchasing. Here are some tips for steering clear of the scammers and frauds. First, never make a deal with a dealer or company that is not well established. Second, always ask to see a sample product (or more, if possible) before you place any size order from the wholesale dealer.

3. Be prepared to write the big check. Many newcomers to the world of wholesale purchasing have been preened on the idea that they do not need many assets or up-front investments in order to get started. They think that with a small amount of money they will be able to go far in the world of wholesale purchasing. While it is true that wholesale purchasing doesn’t require that you start off with loads of money in order to get a decent-sized inventory, you will probably have to write at least one big check. Many newcomers are startled when this moment comes along, and they begin to have second thoughts.

4. Lessen the shock of wholesale purchasing by focusing on an area you are interested in. This makes sense for any business or life pursuit: choose something that you are truly interested in. Don’t choose something that you feel lukewarm about. You will need to stay focused and passionate about what you are doing, so make sure you choose things that you are interested in. This will make the long hours of work seem like they are all worth it. Of course, you should also take into account products that you think will sell. Hopefully you will end up with a product inventory that merges your interests with products that can turn a profit.
