skill in today’s business world. Some people shy away from
networking because of preconceived notions about what in entails.
Knowing the truth about these misconceptions about networking
can make it seem like a more desirable option.

of the most common myths about networking is that it is
old school. People think networking is a thing of the past,
but in actuality it is the opposite. Networking is becoming
more and more popular. Research shows that 48 percent of professionals
are networking more now than in years past. This may be due
in some part to the fact that 75 percent of all jobs available
are not publicly advertised. Networking can penetrate the hidden
job market.
Another common myth about networking is that you
must be an extrovert to do it productively. This is definitely not the
case. People who are shy or reserved can still make meaningful
connections. If you are an introvert you may want to consider
some alternatives that may make you more comfortable. For example,
use the Internet to network online or create your own networking
opportunities that are more intimate in nature. Also, keep
in mind if you are not good at initiating conversations; try
to put your listening skills to the test instead.
People also assume that networking
is time consuming, which
is not true. Networking does not mean dedicating an entire
evening or weekend to meeting new people. You should reach
out to people during your normal daily routine. This includes
waiting in line at the grocery store, attending your child’s
PTA meeting, or sitting at a baseball game. All contacts are
important and having a diverse networking circle is beneficial,
therefore networking in some nontraditional locales is ideal
and a great time saver.
Another myth is that all networking should be done face
to face. The growing popularity of the Internet for online networking
make in person connections less vital. You can meet people
and develop relationships using message boards, blogs and virtual
chat rooms. The Internet puts you in contact with thousands
of people with similar interests in seconds.
Another common misconception is that your
contacts will be annoyed if you ask for their assistance. Generally as long
as you follow some basic rules of etiquette no one will mind
if you ask for their help. Keep in mind networking is a reciprocal
set up. People will not mind assisting you because they expect
you help in the future.
Another big misunderstanding is that it
is more important to give out your business cards than
to receive them. While
you should hand out your cards generously, if people aren’t
interested they won’t keep your card or call you. However,
if you ask for their card you control the contact, therefore
it is of equal or greater importance to collect other people’s
business cards as it is to distribute your own. It is also
essential to make sure you follow up 24 to 48 hours after the
initial meeting.
Another myth about networking is that it
ends when your meeting ends. The reality is networking is about building and maintaining
relationships and is therefore an ongoing process. You should
follow up with a brief note, email or phone call within 48
hours of the initial contact and you should set aside time
each month to reconnect with meaningful acquaintances.
Knowing the truth about these common networking myths will
hopefully broaden its appeal. Networking continues to grow
in popularity and importance and therefore will remain a crucial
part of doing business.
