How To Successfully Network Yourself
Great
Tips For Following Up on a Networking Event
Networking can be defined as creating a desirable
connection with people that you can provide value to and receive
value from. In the business world networking events are becoming
the norm. These involve social gatherings, seminars and organizational
events. One of the most important factors in making networking
a success is following up after the event.
One
simple way to follow up the initial contact is with a brief
note. The best time to send a follow up note is 24-48
hours after the event. Make sure you thank them for their time
and reintroduce yourself in a few lines. A reintroduction is
necessary because more than likely they met many new people
at the event and this will help remind them of exactly who
you are. In addition, a note is an easy way to express your
appreciation for any advice or information the person may have
given you. A concise letter will help make sure the person
knows you are grateful for the time they spent with you, and
that you hope they will keep you in mind for future endeavors.
Also in your follow up letter you should give
them the link to your website so they can learn more about you and your business.
If your company has a newsletter you should use this as an
opportunity to ask them to subscribe, so that they always know
what you are up to. They may even pass the newsletter on to
other people expanding your network even further. A newsletter
is the easiest way to stay in touch in the business world.
It may also be helpful to organize
a follow up system. Organize
business cards in a binder or use a computer database system.
Managing your network contact information can help you set
up future meetings. You should organize your contacts into
an A, B, and C list to help remember when you last contacted
the person and when the next time you should reconnect with
them.
Also, remember to follow up if someone gives you a referral.
If your contact took the time to refer you to a colleague you
should take the time to call and thank them. Besides thanking
them you may want to mention how the interaction went, and
volunteer to refer them as well.
It is important that once a meaningful connection is established
you try to keep it alive. This means if you hear of a special
recognition or award that your contact has been presented with
you should send a congratulatory note. If you come across something
that you believe will be of special interest to the person
it would be a thoughtful gesture to forward the information
or give them a quick call. This will let them know not only
that you are thinking of them but that you are trying to be
helpful as well.
It is important to remember that networks are more than just
initial meetings or stacks of business cards. Networks
consist of people and the relationships they build. This means that
it is crucial that you put in the effort and time to keep the
connection going. Don’t let the contact end with the initial
meeting.
It is also important to not wait until you need help to use
your networking contacts. You should remain in contact even
when you don’t need anything. This means offering your help
even if you need nothing in return. This will ensure that they
will be there for you when the time comes that you need their
assistance. Following up with network contacts will help make
the experience a success.
